Anabolic Steroids and Liver Toxicity

Anyone planning to use or already using anabolic steroids should ensure their liver is in proper health condition. The liver is a vital organ that we can’t live without. While the liver has the power to regenerate and heal itself, abusing certain substances including certain anabolic steroids can cause permanent liver damage. That’s why it is important to make sure you use steroids carefully and strategically.

Having that said, people who are suffering from liver issues shouldn’t use anabolic steroids that are liver toxic. Not all steroids are liver toxic, but it is important to avoid those that are. In order to make sure that your liver is in good health condition, you can check your AST and ALT levels.

The range results for typical liver function tests include ALT: 7 to 55 units per liter (U/L) and AST: 8 to 48 U/L. If it’s out of range, avoid the use of hepatotoxic (liver toxic) steroids until it gets back to normal.

Assuming that you do have normal liver function and health, you can use liver toxic steroids, however, do not abuse them. It is perfectly normal for liver function test results to increase while using liver toxic steroids, that’s something you can expect. However, you should ensure that they do not get out of hand.

Explaining Steroids and Liver Health

As said, not all steroids are liver toxic. For example, Testosterone, Nandrolone, Drostanolone, and Boldenone (any esters) are not liver toxic steroids. On the other hand, Dianabol (Methandrostenolone), Winstrol (Stanozolol), Anavar (Oxandrolone), and Anadrol (Oxymetholone) are liver toxic. As you may have noticed, injectable steroids do not tend to be hepatotoxic, while orals are.

Still, not all injectables are liver-friendly (for example, injectable Stanozolol is still liver toxic), and not all oral steroids are hepatotoxic (for example, Oral Primobolan – Methenolone Acetate, is not liver toxic, although some studies suggest that long term use and huge dosages can still cause some liver issues).

Anyway, most injectables are safe for the liver while most orals are not because orals require the C17 Alpha Alkylation in order to stay bioactive after passing through the liver. Without C17AA, the oral steroid would be destroyed by the liver, not making it effective. An exception is Methenolone Acetate, but you need to use high doses of it so it can be effective. However, the C17AA damages the liver. On the other hand, injectables do not pass through the liver, they enter your bloodstream directly. An exception is Stanozolol which will still harm your liver despite injecting it.

Protecting Your Liver While Using Steroids

Now, let’s assume that your liver is in good condition (if it isn’t, you just shouldn’t use hepatotoxic steroids at all) and you plan to use some of the steroids that are liver toxic. As said, it is expected that your AST/ALT numbers will increase during the use because your liver takes a hit. However, you can protect it. As said, the liver recovers, so as long as it is in good health before starting the use of steroids, it will recover back to normal when you stop taking steroids so the numbers will drop back to normal. Here’s what you can do in order to avoid getting permanent liver damage and avoiding a dangerous spike in AST/ALT levels:

Ways To Protect Your Liver

  • Do not use hepatotoxic steroids for too long. While you can use injectable (non toxic) steroids for 14-18 weeks (or even a lifetime, such as testosterone for TRT), oral steroids should be used for no longer than 6-8 weeks. The most toxic steroids for only up to 4 weeks.
  • Do not use too high a dosage. That’s common sense – the higher the dosage, the higher the hit your liver takes. You don’t need to abuse steroids for them to be effective. Use them in recommended dosages.
  • Have adequate breaks in between cycles of oral (hepatotoxic) steroids. This means that if you use an oral for a while, you shouldn’t use any liver toxic steroids anytime soon so your liver has enough time to recover itself. Usually, I recommend abstaining from using steroids for at least the same amount of time as you’ve been on them. For example, if you used them for 6 weeks, have a break of 6 weeks before starting another cycle. Or until you can confirm your liver is in good condition again with a liver test.
  • Don’t stack with anything liver toxic. That’s why it is not a good idea to use two oral steroids at the same time – your liver takes an even bigger hit. Also, you shouldn’t use anything else that puts even more stress on your liver during the use of steroids, such as various OTC medications and alcohol.
  • Use liver protection supplements. There are various supplements that may help your liver. I strongly recommend using them during the use of hepatotoxic steroids as they could protect the liver. You may even continue taking those supplements for a while after discontinuing the use of toxic steroids.

Liver Protection Supplements

Lots of beginners are wondering what are the best liver protection supplements. Similar to anabolic steroids, there is not “the overall best”. There are only those that work better for particular people. What you can do is try multiple ones and see which are better for you. Some notable examples include:

  • LIV 52
  • NAC
  • TUDCA
  • N2Guard
  • Milk Thistle

There are numerous others as well, these are just some examples. You can buy them from local supplement stores or online supplement stores. We do offer one (LIV 52) if you are interested, but you can go for whichever works best for you. And if you wonder – yes, you can stack multiple liver protection supplements if you want to. You use them as stated on the box, or could even use higher doses as long as you use hepatotoxic steroids to protect your liver. I recommend using them during the use of any oral steroids for the entire time you use them, and maybe a few weeks after you discontinue their use.

Conclusion

In the end, I strongly recommend using liver protection supplements, going for shorter cycles, using liver toxic steroids in proper doses, and avoiding using anything else that is liver toxic while you already use oral steroids and your liver takes a hit. In short, do everything you can to protect your liver.
